    1. The Michener formula was certainly was firing on all eight cylinders with 'Centennial'. I own a farm in Weld County CO and would have liked to have thanked the author and his research staff for the all the backstory as to the who what why and how of the Centennial State. Over 40 years old and the story holds up remarkably well.

  2. Love this idea - I'm a huge Michener fan. Fact is, I've been hunting for the Kent State book for years and haven't gotten hold of it yet.

One I didn't see on the list that's on my shelves is James A Michener's Writers Handbook (1992).

  5. I'm looking for one of his short stories, but don't remember the name. A different government came and took the men away, and in school a new teacher quickly charmed the children into thinking the way the new government wanted them to think. It's written from the perspective of a young boy

  22. I'm a longtime Michener fan and enjoyed discovering this list of his works. At this point it looks like I have read about sixteen of his books. Perhaps it's just a coincidence that I enjoy the same things that Michener did: travel, music, art, science, history, maps.

After reading so many of his lengthy works, by contrast I still consider my favorite to be the relatively short Tales of the South Pacific. I also recommend this to those who have never read a Michener book, particularly young people.

When visiting Doylestown, Pennsylvania recently it was fascinating to see his personal memorabilia at the art museum named in his honor, and also going around town to see his boyhood homes.

He had a powerful influence on many modern writers, including Edward Rutherfurd, who likes to identify as Michener's literary heir. I like to read him too but still consider Mitchener the master of the genre.

Right now I'm finishing up The Novel, which is set in the Doylestown area. Always interesting to read Michener's observations about his own people.

So nice to see the comments of other Michener fans.

  23. Michener teamed with an American artist to produce a large-size limited-edition volume on Japan which was issued in a folding oriental box. "East" was somewhere in the title. I'm trying to find the name of the artist. Can you help? Many thanks.

  24. Might it be Facing East, with the artist being Jack Levine?

Planning to start Iberia by JAM shortly. It has been on my shelf awaiting its turn!
